Penny Dreadful: Season 1
Familiar classical literary characters, well known and loved by millions over the years come together in this dark psychological thriller. Penny dreadful brings the likes of Dr Frankenstein and Dorian Grey to life in a new way, exploring their origins and back stories in the dark corners of a very gothic Victorian London. The show centres around a rather seductive clairvoyant by the name Vanessa Ives (played by Eva Green) as she helps her friend Sir Malcolm rescue his daughter from the city’s creatures.
The show comes with an incredible and very talented cast that include Eva Green, Billie piper, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton. The costumes and the sets are incredibly stylish and give the show a very dark and truly gothic feel. Eva Greens portrayal of Vanessa Ives is what makes this show.
Despite all that talent and time that’s clearly been devoted to the settings, the costumes and the character development, the first season is rather slow moving it seems more devoted to character introduction and set up rather than the actual story arc. The show has massive potential to be so much more than it delivers early on. This is a show to stick with though, despite being slow to begin with – once it finds it’s flow it’s truly magnificent.
