Newcastle “Robot” exhibition: A collection of robots, cyborgs and androids.
This week we had pretty much exclusive access all to ourselves of the new Robot exhibition at the Life Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne… there’s a collection of over 40 full size robot models, heads and toys from the past 60 years of cult TV shows and movies to see.
We also enjoyed the planetarium and the “Happy Feet” 4D motion ride while we were there – and played in the kids education section too as don’t need an excuse to be childish. If you’re in the North East of England then be sure to take a look.

DOME HEAD PLANET ROBOT – Forbidden Planet
LIFE SIZE
A full sized version of the Action Planet Robot Toy sold in the 1950s was created by Shaw Robotics, the original Dalek builder. The Forbidden Planet movie generated many toy reproductions of Robby, one of which was this Action Planet Robot.

B9 ROBOT – Lost in Space science fiction TV series
LIFE SIZE
This B9 replica is a personal project by Andy Shaw, incorporating some B9 robot builders’ club build techniques. Customisation includes: brain upgrade and touch sensitive control panels. The original Robot was designed by Robert Kinoshita, whose other cybernetic claim to fame is as the designer of Forbidden Planet’s Robby the Robot.

ED-209 (The Enforcement Droid Series 209) robot prop, used in the production of an unknown TV commercial.
KRYTEN – Red Dwarf

A complete ‘naked’ Kryten 2X4B-523P costume worn by Robert Llewellyn in the BBC TV series Red Dwarf. This ‘one of a kind’ outfit displayed on a custom made mannequin It can be seen in the series 8 episode ‘Back in the Red: Part 2′.
BLUE R2 DROID – Star Wars

Surprisingly, this full-sized battle damaged R2-D2 provided by Jolly Rodger was originally intended for use as a drinks cabinet.
C-3PO DROID – Star Wars

Described by Jolly Rodger as an android butler for use as a decoration in a theme bar. The original C-3PO was made by Mitchell Engineering and the resident engineers at Elstree Film Studios.
IRON MAN – Marvel Comics

Life size Iron Man (Tony Stark/Robert Downey, Jr) figure used to promote the Iron Man movie in movie theatres – created by Marc and Gaby Klinnert.
MICHAEL JACKSON – Moonwalker

The Jackson robot from the 1988 movie Michael Jackson: Moonwalker also made an appearance in the much-beloved “Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker” video game.

In 1509, Leonardo da Vinci created a wind-up lion as a greeting for Louis XII in Italy. Toy robots started popping up as far back in history as the 1940’s with the Japanese being the first to build recreational robots.
SUPER ROBOT MONKEY TEAM HYPERFORCE GO! – Japanese Anime TV Series

When fighting larger enemies, the Hyperforce uses the Super Robot, which can split into six separate vehicles. Its main attack, when combined as the whole robot, is Lasertron Fury, a powerful energy beam that is fired from its chest.
C-3PO VINTAGE MODEL – Star Wars

The Kenner toy company produced a line of Star Wars action figures based on characters in the original Star Wars movie trilogy. Over 100 unique action figures were produced and sold from 1978 to 1985, during which time over 300 million Star Wars action figures were sold.
OMNIBOT

Omnibot manufactured by Tomy in the mid 1980s. The initial Omnibot was announced with expectations of restoring popular interest in robots, at a time when it was becoming obvious that robots with advanced AI such as R2-D2 were still a long way away.
BICENTENNIAL MAN ROBOT

This robot head can be seen on the shelf in Rupert’s lab as he and Andrew meet for the first time. The smooth, futuristic head is made from a brass coated resin and features a hollow interior.

Pino Robot by Radica 2004, – Dimensions: 14″ (355.6 mm) high. Pino was widely available in 2004, and is now already a classic collectable robot.
THE SURROGATES ROBOT PARTS
LIFE SIZE
Surrogate robot body parts were created for the production of the 2009 sci-fi thriller Surrogates. These body parts can be seen as Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) and his partner are investigating a surrogate lab. Crafted out of intricately carved biscuit foam, made of circuitry and other electronic parts.
WEBER ROBOT – Flubber

This amazing robot is the larger of two hero robots custom built for the production. The robot’s top section and arms are aluminum alloy. Each arm features three fingerhands, as well as adjustable joints at the shoulders, elbows and wrists. Body is fiberglass and acrylic which house the many servos and cables needed to bring the robot to life.

Robot RH34 is a one of a kind hand built robot designed for the Big Apple’s world famous NYC department store.

MARTIAN – Mars Attacks!

Articulated Martian figure. Full sized martians were made for mid-distance and background use in the film. This replica figure was cast from the original production moulds.

Promotional walk about costume- acquired from The Movie Magic exhibition in 1998. This costume is thought to have been used to promote the movie, was cast from the original prop moulds and acquired from a member of the film’s special effects team.
S.I.M.O.N ROBOT – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

A Robot head’ used in the production of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This is the head of the S.I.M.O.N. Robot that Lara battles at the beginning of the movie. There are bullet-hits over most parts which match up to the action that you see on screen, as well as intentional ‘battle-damaged’ distress.

Used on the set during production, a unique custom piece created for the film in the style of the NS-series robots.

Robot’s claw used in the Matt LeBlanc and Heather Graham sci-fi movie Lost In Space. The highly detailed claw is made from aluminium with plastic components. The movable pincers are made from blue and pink anodised metal and have been distressed to give it an aged look.
